Birth and Early Life

Fredric William Brown was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on October 29, 1906. After completing high school in 1921, he worked as an office boy, an experience that would later inspire his novel "Office."

Early Writing Career

Brown began his writing career in the mid-1930s as a reporter for the "Milwaukee Journal." He initially wrote detective fiction, but he became more famous for his humorous science fiction stories.

Detective Breakthrough: "The Fabulous Clipjoint"

In 1947, Brown achieved a literary breakthrough with his first detective novel, "The Fabulous Clipjoint." The novel earned him an Edgar Award, enabling him to quit his reporting job and focus on writing full-time.

Nomadic Years in Search of Health

Beginning in 1949, Brown embarked on a nomadic journey in search of a climate conducive to his health. He spent three years in Taos, New Mexico, and two years in Los Angeles, but his health continued to deteriorate.

Screenwriting and Decline

From 1961 to 1963, Brown worked as a screenwriter in California, particularly for the "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" television series. However, his health forced him to return to Tucson in 1963.

In 1965, Brown's writing career effectively ended. His health declined, and he entered a hospital in 1972, where he died shortly after.

Legacy as a Master Storyteller

Despite the brevity of many of Brown's works, he is widely acclaimed as a master of the short story. His brilliant humor, ingenious plot twists, and satirical wit have earned him a prominent place in the history of humorous and satirical science fiction.
